Immersive Heritage Storytelling

The project

The contemporary heritage visitor is looking for unique experiences. To design these experiences, powerful stories and technological innovation are essential. There is, however, no existing benchmark for the way in which both elements can be combined successfully. Scan4Stories tries to provide  an answer to this challenge. Scan4Stories is a TETRA project in which the Howest programs Tourism and Recreation Management and Digital Arts & Entertainment join forces. The project gathers knowledge about Storytelling and explores the technical possibilities of Immersive Technologies such as Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality.

On the one hand, the project reports on the state of play concerning storytelling and immersive technology in the tourism and heritage field. On the other hand, the players within the field are questioned and best and worst practices are mapped. Based on this knowledge and feedback of the professional field (represented by the members of the steering group) the benchmark is formalized.

The main goals of this project are to create a widely implementable methodology for the tourism and heritage field and to clarify how immersive technology can be used to let stories shine and transfer them effectively onto the public. This methodology, in which storytelling techniques are key, is illustrated by three prototypes. To ensure that these prototypes are sufficiently representative for the field, they are developed in close cooperation with the members of the steering group. Using this methodology and these prototypes should give the field new possibilities to create immersive, interactive and authentic experiences in an informed manner.

This will eventually lead to a renewed and contemporary support base for the heritage field, more intense experiences for the visitors, as well as a bigger and recurring audience with a positive economic return as a result.
